Observations worth discussing
Talk with a paediatrician and an appropriate specialist when expected skills are difficult to acquire, previously gained skills are lost, or challenges clearly affect everyday life.
- difficulty holding instructions and finishing tasks
- noticeable language or school-skill delay
- memory, planning or self-regulation difficulties
- behaviour that disrupts home or school life
- loss of a previously acquired skill
What assessment is for
Assessment is not about attaching a label. It helps identify strengths, clarify the nature of a difficulty and decide whether medical, speech-language, psychological or educational assessment is also needed.
When not to wait
Loss of skills, seizures, sudden changes in behaviour or consciousness, and new symptoms after an injury may require urgent medical assessment first.
